Mobile telephony sees continued growth in Cape Verde in first half Praia, Cape Verde, 20 Aug
The number of mobile telephone subscribers in Cape Verde rose 5 percent in the first 6 months of the year against the previous half to over 367,000, according to figures from the National Communications Agency. Also, according to the Cape Verdean communications regulator, the penetration rates of mobile services in the country at the end of the first half stood at 71%, whilst at the end of 2009 it stood at 69 percent. The penetration for fixed-line services in the first half of 2010 stood at 14 percent, with almost 72,000 telephone lines installed, continuing the stagnation the sector has seen since 2005. Internet access service grew in the first six months of the year, wit the number of subscribers rising by around 67%, now standing at almost 28,000, a rise that was related to "The entry of new competitors in the market" and a slight drop in prices. Paid Tv in the first half of 2010 had 7,135 subscribers, seeing a of drop in the number of users of 426 against 2009. Cape Verde has currently two paid tv service providers. \pid television (Cable tv) was launched by CV telecom in June 2006, and was followed by a Chinese-owned company, CVXTV, which started operating in Cape Verde in 2007
